COMMISSIONING
Commissioning a centrifugal pump involves a structured process of pre-startup checks, priming, rotation verification, and performance testing to ensure safe and efficient operation.
Pre-Commissioning Inspections
- Cleanliness and Piping: Flush all suction and discharge lines to remove weld slag, dirt, or debris. Ensure pipes are connected without putting external stress on the pump flanges.
- Foundation and Grouting: Verify the baseplate is level and securely anchored to the concrete foundation.
- Alignment: Check pump-to-motor shaft alignment using a straight edge, dial indicator, or laser tool to prevent bearing and seal wear.
- Lubrication: Confirm that bearing housings and oilers are filled with the correct grade and level of lubricant.
- Mechanical Seals: Ensure shipping locks are removed, auxiliary flush plans are hooked up, and seal pressures are set
Startup and Operation
- Rotation Check: Disconnect the coupling or perform a quick “bump start” on the motor to verify that shaft rotation matches the arrow on the pump casing
- Priming: Fill the pump casing and suction line completely with liquid and vent any trapped air; never run a centrifugal pump dry
- Valve Positioning: Open the suction valve fully and close (or slightly crack) the discharge valve to minimize initial motor overload
- Running the Pump: Start the motor and immediately open the discharge valve smoothly to the desired flow rate. Do not run against a completely closed discharge valve for more than a few seconds to 20 seconds maximum to prevent overheating

THINGS WE CAN DO FOR YOU
- Build a solid base: Set a level concrete foundation to support the entire weight of the pump and motor without shifting.
- Level the baseplate: Anchor the base securely, ensuring it is flat and level within tight tolerances before mounting equipment.
- Grout the base: Fill the baseplate completely with grout to eliminate empty spaces and absorb operational vibrations.
